I have been involved with the swimming club for 25 years joining as a spectator when my children were 6 and 7. There was a strong supporters section which helped t run galas and fund raising organising all sorts of events for both swimmers and parents. As the club developed poolside helpers were needed and I found myself being dragged in. I really started to enjoy teaching (as long as it did not involve my children :) ). I became club chairperson and continued to work on poolside as a teacher and coach achieving my level 3 coaching award 8 years ago. I am now a volunteer coach and work with the Junior Masters and the disabled swim squad. I am also a Judge 2 /starter after a poor start managing to be one of an elite group who managed to fail the old time keepers course about 15 years ago I think I have improved since then.

Swimmimg is a brilliant sport and a necessary life skill, it helps children to discipline themselves and develop excellent organisational skills .For my children, it has, through gaining work as lifeguards and teaching enabled them to finance many schemes and to for my son to gain entry to a degree course which led him into permanent employment with a range of sports governing bodies. For my daughter it has helped her to support herself whilst becoming a working artist.

Being a coach is a privilege I would not have missed, I still see many of the young people I have worked with and they have all grown into independent articulate individuals who are not afraid to take on a challenge.
