Coach

Tom Harforth

I started my coaching career as the Assistant Head Coach in 2011 here at Middlesbrough, where I worked under Lisa Bates. During this time I worked with the National Age Group Squad where my aim was to develop the Age Groupers and assist their transition to youth/senior athletes.

In 2014 I became the Head Coach of Middlesbrough ASC and by implementing my coaching philosophy into the programme, I changed the club squad structure to facilitate progression and allow swimmers to maximise their own potential.

As Head Coach of Middlesbrough ASC, I have seen the club achieve the following from its swimmers;

Swimmer Selection for the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa (2015) British Championships Medalist 2015 British Championships Qualifiers 2015, 2016, 2017 British National Qualifiers 2015, 2016, 2017 English National Medalists (2016) English Nationals Qualifiers 2015, 2016, 2017 International Representative at Para Swimming Championships Increased number of Medalists, Finalists and Qualifiers for NERs (Regional) and N&Ds (District) from 2015 through to 2018

My Current Qualifications are;

  • Level 3 Coaching Aquatics
  • Level 2 Teaching Aquatics
  • Level 2 Coaching Open Water Swimming
  • Level 2 Gym Instructor
  • 2:1 Degree in Applied Sport Science

I have an unbelievable passion for Middlesbrough ASC and my aim is to guide this Club too success

Coach

Joe Richards

I’m a 21 year old swimming coach from Northallerton and have been coaching for around five years, the majority of this time has been spent coaching at Bedale sharks. In June 2015 after previously swimming for and spending time volunteering as a coach for MASC I took up the full time position of Assistant Head Coach, giving me the opportunity to coach the Potential Squad.

As a coach I try to bring kids on in the sport through both enjoyment and hard work, as a group we try to nail down the basics before working on the specifics. I am thoroughly enjoying every moment at MASC and the kids have already shown rapid improvement in the short time they have spent with me. I can't wait to see what the future holds…..

Coach

Jim Mooney

I have been involved in Teaching and Coaching since the early 1990’s mainly with three clubs in Scotland. . I was lucky enough to work with several British Champions at Age-Group level as squad coach and very lucky to coach an age-group Scottish Champion in 100m Butterfly. On moving to England I took a break from Swimming until my Grandson joined Middlesbrough ASC just over a year ago.

My role is simple: to convince each swimmer they can swim faster than they have ever done before, which for all the squad begins in training and I would like to commend the squad for the effort they show in Training. Our motto in the squad is Train soft race soft, train hard race hard.

As for the future, my hopes are that more of the squad will break 30 seconds for 50m Freestyle in addition to breaking the minute for 100m Freestyle, with hard work and improved awareness of training times I think we will be successful as a squad in achieving our goals.

Coach

Stuart Wilmott

I have been involved in the swimming world since I joined my local swimming club in London at the age of 7 where I took to it like a " fish to water " you might say, winning my first national age group medal by the age of 11. I eventually went on to become British Champion in several events and was English Record Holder for 200m IM. I represented Great Britain on many occasions at both Junior and senior level culminating in competing at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984.

In 1986 I joined Cleveland Police where I continued to compete and be involved in swimming. In 2001 I became involved in coaching, part time, at Middlesbrough ASC when my daughter Aimee began to swim at the club. I was involved in coaching several squads as Aimee progressed through the club until I was coaching what is now the National Potential Squad, under the guidance of head coach Les Green. During this time a large number of swimmers I had coached made national age group times and several went on to become national age group champions.

Since then I have coached at the club on and off for head coaches, Steve Cox, Lisa Bates and Tom Harforth until retiring from the police in 2016 and taking up the role of assistant coach responsible for the junior development squad. My main ethos is ensuring that young swimmers obtain the correct technical abilities to enable them to achieve their potential if that is what they strive to do........ you don't see many world class swimmers with poor technique!!!!

Academy

Sorry, their photo broke the internet

Training Times

Sunday 3.00 - 4.00pm (Neptune Centre)

Tuesday 6.00 - 7.00 pm (Rainbow Centre) - INVITED SWIMMERS ONLY

Squad Criteria

The MASC Academy was a program set up initially by MASC head coach Tom Harforth, to be a gateway between swimming lessons and the main squads in the club. The academy takes children from as young as 4 years old and runs in conjunction with Leisure Centre and swim school lessons.

The aim of the academy is to purely focus on the skills of a young swimmer. Improving their technique across all 4 strokes, racing dives and turns, and also things like sculling and fly kicks, with everything being geared towards the child hopefully moving up into one of the mains squads of the club.

The Academy is ran by Joe Richards who is the Assistant head coach and works with the Potential Squad. But the academy wouldnt even be plausible without the team of volunteers doing the hard work. This team includes, National, Performance and masters swimmers, qualified swimming teachers, and an Olympian, who create a fun learning environment for the kids to work towards the criteria set by the club.

For Swimmers looking to Join the MASC Academy we are looking at Swimmers aged between 5yrs-10yrs and who are currently involved in Learn to Swim Lessons or part of a Swim School

We look forward to seeing you there!
