Squads

Squad Placement

The squad structure is designed to be progressive, for swimmers to develop through various different pathways in line with the Long Term Athlete Development Plan.

Squad criteria are in place to ensure that squad selections are not only fair on swimmers, but correct for the individual swimmers physiological and psychological development.

National Squad

Swimmers within this Squad will be selected at the discretion of the Head Coach and will demonstrate the ability to meet the Squad criteria.

They will be selected based on the 3 A’s; Ability, Attitude, Attendance.

Commitment, Long Term Potential and Gala Performance will also be taken into Consideration

Total commitment with exceptional discipline is required in this Squad. Swimmers will be targeting British Championships and National/International Competition whilst still representing the Club in Regional (Minimum of 5 Events), District (5 + Events) and High Standard Open Meets.

Potential Squad

Swimmers will be training Full Time with the Assistant Head Coach.

Swimmers within this Squad will be selected at the discretion of the Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach and will demonstrate the ability to meet the Squad criteria.

They will be selected based on the 3 A’s; Ability, Attitude, Attendance

Training for this Squad will be based primarily on developing Aerobic Capacity and Stroke Efficiency, with both working in parallel.

Total commitment with discipline is required in this Squad and morning training commitments must be made depending on age (Discussed individually with Lead Coach),

Swimmers will be targeting North East Regional’s and Districts, and should aspire to be in the National Squad.

Performance Squad

Swimmers within this Squad will be selected at the discretion of the Head Coach and Lead Squad Coach and will demonstrate the ability to meet the Squad criteria.

Training for this Squad will be based around developing Aerobic Capacity and Stroke Efficiency, to enhance progression.

Regular attendance at competitions/meets is required throughout the season.

For Swimmers within this Squad to progress to the National Squad they MUST be attending Morning Sessions and fulfil the National Squad Criteria

Swimmers in this Squad will generally be aiming to compete at District and Regional Level and compete at Graded Meets.

Junior Development Squad

Swimmers within this Squad will be selected at the discretion of the Head Coach and Squad Coach and will demonstrate the ability to meet the Squad criteria.

This is a comprehensive period of training that covers all aspects of developing swimmers’ needs. Swimmers in this Squad will be taught/coached in the following; Advanced Stroke Technique, Starts/Turns/Finishes, Lane Discipline/Clock Reading, Flexibility Routines, General mentorship and advice for competitive swimming

Total Discipline is required in this Squad and swimmers must be willing to listen and absorb information, then put it into practice consistently.

Swimmers within this Squad should aspire to progress into the Potential Squad

At the ages of 7/8 years, swimmers will compete in local, friendly mini-galas and invitational galas. As swimmers reach 9 years, they will be eligible to compete in District Championships and the Junior Diddy league, along with graded competitions.

Information regarding upcoming galas and Junior Diddy League will be on the Noticeboard and Club Website

Academy

This Squad is aimed at our younger swimmers (4-8yrs) who are just starting their swimming journey with Middlesbrough ASC.

Swimmers will be invited into the Academy by our Club Coaches through Council Lessons, School Swimming Lessons, Local Swim Schools and Holiday Camps that Middlesbrough Swimming Club will run during school holidays.

The aims of the MASC Academy are to:

Introduce Club Level Swimming,
Develop Fundamentals, and
Refine Water Skills.

Swimmers who are progressing well within the MASC Academy may be invited to attend additional bridging sessions to further develop their skills and prepare for progression within the club.

Swimmers who attend the MASC Academy will receive a Middlesbrough Swimming Club Cap and MASC Academy T-shirt when they join

Masters Squad

The Masters Squad in our Club is geared towards providing training/competition opportunities for adult swimmers who may have been competitive in the past and want to stay involved, or perhaps are late starters in the sport.

This Squad is for both competitive and social swimmers who are looking to maintain their fitness.

This Squad has a structured programme so all members are required to join the Club.
